CCPA Statement on Withdrawal of CMS Demonstration Weakening Medicare Part D Six Protected Classes

CCPA applauds the Biden Administration’s decision to withdraw a demonstration that would have undercut Medicare Part D’s six protected classes drug policy. The six protected classes ensure that drugs for certain life-threatening conditions are covered by Medicare. Now, patients with cancer, epilepsy, HIV, mental health illness, lupus, Parkinson’s Disease, and other complex diseases can work with their provider to determine the best course of treatment without having to worry whether their medications will be covered.

The decision to uphold the six protected classes prioritizes patients and their wellbeing. CCPA supports any policy decision that enables patients with chronic disease to receive effective, patient-centered care. We hope that the administration will continue to pursue policies that lower barriers to healthcare access and put patients first.
